holiday party post

Aphrodite's New York loft is done up to the nines.

The first good look as one enters is of twinkling Manhattan through the big windows, lights bright against a dark winter sky. The windows take up most of two walls; the rest of the space is largely empty, the star of the show a glowingly polished hardwood floor perfect for dancing.

There's a cluster of low-slung couches and chairs at one end of the room, velvet and leather and very inviting. They're situated by the fireplace, which lends them a cozy glow-- though it isn't cold anywhere in here, despite the windows.

Aphrodite is very proud of a few things about tonight:

1) The music, which spans a decent range of time periods and tempos, and will be playing for most of the evening.
2) The decorations, understated but quite lovely: softly glowing lights, silver and gold ribbons wound around columns and draped from the ceiling ... the occasional strategically placed bit of mistletoe.
3) Her dress.

And yes, darlings, there is a very well stocked bar and counter full of snacks.

That's what happens when you enlist the Three Graces to help you plan your shindigs.

"Yes."

X's response is prompt.

"It was useful in Ambergeldar. When Parker and Perry were kidnapped."

By Norman the dragon.

"And Kate taught me more. In Milliways."

A pause.

"I like jumping."

In case that is in any way a surprise.

No. Not in any way a surprise.

'Ah, but there's riding, and then there's riding while hitting a little ball with a long mallet.'

Obviously, an important and productive enterprise.

X just looks at him, head tilting slightly.

"Shooting while riding would be more useful. Or using an axe."

Beat.

"Mallets are not guaranteed to cause enough damage."

Little balls are not, either. Generally. Unless one has super-strength, and the ball itself is super-durable.

'...I think the people who regulate Polo would object to guns and axes.'

Though hey, you never know what might turn a sport interesting.

'And - keep in mind I'm no expert, here - I don't think causing damage is the ultimate point.'
cutting_edgex23: ([NXM] Dubious)

[personal profile] cutting_edgex23 2012-12-09 04:35 am (UTC)(link)
X considers that.

"It is not meant to be in hockey, either. Or baseball. Or football."

Her expression has gone dubious.

"But it happens. A lot."

'True.'

He looks a bit dubious himself, but that might be because he thinks polo is a dubious kind of sport.

'The difference is, polo's not supposed to be a sport for the masses. It's supposed to be for,' people like him, 'more refined natures. It's famously popular amongst royalty.'

Reason enough not to like it, right there.

"Kings and warlords kill each other a lot, too."

What?

She did some work in areas of the world where that is, indeed, true.

It's not like she forgot.

'Yeah, but they're allowed. Or they were. Not so much any more, I think.'

Other people have taken over that role.

'So now they've got nothing better to do than waste time riding horses, hitting balls with sticks.'

Bruce doesn't like wasted time. Hence, no polo.

"I like coaching Little League better."

Just so Bruce knows.

"And you need to sleep."

Beat.

"There is less time to waste. But the impression would be useful."

She is just saying.

'Maybe.'

Oh God, he is not going to cave on this. Really. He steps her neatly around in a couple of circles, and settles back into the rhythm.

'My ploy of being seen being out in public, generally being a dick and buying lots of things seems to be cover enough, at the moment. It gives them something to write about.'
cutting_edgex23: ([solo] wry smile)

[personal profile] cutting_edgex23 2012-12-11 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
"The photographs of polo would be more entertaining."

She's not laughing at him, really.

(Largely because she doesn't really laugh at all.)

But the corner of her mouth might be quirked in a very, very tiny smile.
master_bruce: (Have A Good Day)

[personal profile] master_bruce 2012-12-11 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
'Oh, shush.'

He's saying it at the smile, not her words.

Though obviously, she isn't laughing at him.

He kisses the quirky corner anyway, just lightly. So it'll go away.

Of course.

The kiss does not cause her to stumble, though she does tighten the grip of her hand on his.

Gently.

That tiny smile does not appear to be going anywhere, however.
