holiday party post

Aphrodite's New York loft is done up to the nines.

The first good look as one enters is of twinkling Manhattan through the big windows, lights bright against a dark winter sky. The windows take up most of two walls; the rest of the space is largely empty, the star of the show a glowingly polished hardwood floor perfect for dancing.

There's a cluster of low-slung couches and chairs at one end of the room, velvet and leather and very inviting. They're situated by the fireplace, which lends them a cozy glow-- though it isn't cold anywhere in here, despite the windows.

Aphrodite is very proud of a few things about tonight:

1) The music, which spans a decent range of time periods and tempos, and will be playing for most of the evening.
2) The decorations, understated but quite lovely: softly glowing lights, silver and gold ribbons wound around columns and draped from the ceiling ... the occasional strategically placed bit of mistletoe.
3) Her dress.

And yes, darlings, there is a very well stocked bar and counter full of snacks.

That's what happens when you enlist the Three Graces to help you plan your shindigs.

"You can still punch. If it is required."

X reaches out, cautiously, and pats Kate's shoulder.

"It will be okay."

Then she pauses, frowning, as if to figure out what (and who) Kate is talking abo --

Oh.

"Yes. Bruce came with me. Here. Today."

Because she asked.

The shoulder pat makes her chuckle. She involuntarily flexes the fingers of her left hand — she's left it unbound for some time now, but it's still a little bruised.

"I promised Lady Aphrodite I wouldn't break anythin'. I reckon that includes other guests."

She brightens.

"Ah, the elusive beau. You're quite handsome together."

Kate has an air about her of a doting mother giving the prospective boyfriend the eye.

Don't worry, X, it doesn't last long.

"Has he asked you t'dance yet?"

"Yes, he did. I think it is easier here. A little."

Beat.

"People do not stare."

X, however, is casting a slightly concerned look toward Kate's recently-flexing hand.

She worries.

"You would like to dance, too?"

"Good for him. He's already far more the gentleman than my escort."

She's teasing; even for the evening's surprises, she's in a good humor. It's only that she's eager to dance, you see.

"I would like t'dance, yes."

And, as an afterthought, she lifts her hand again.

"Don't worry, this won't inhibit me none."
