holiday party post
Aphrodite's New York loft is done up to the nines.
The first good look as one enters is of twinkling Manhattan through the big windows, lights bright against a dark winter sky. The windows take up most of two walls; the rest of the space is largely empty, the star of the show a glowingly polished hardwood floor perfect for dancing.
There's a cluster of low-slung couches and chairs at one end of the room, velvet and leather and very inviting. They're situated by the fireplace, which lends them a cozy glow-- though it isn't cold anywhere in here, despite the windows.
Aphrodite is very proud of a few things about tonight:
1) The music, which spans a decent range of time periods and tempos, and will be playing for most of the evening.
2) The decorations, understated but quite lovely: softly glowing lights, silver and gold ribbons wound around columns and draped from the ceiling ... the occasional strategically placed bit of mistletoe.
3) Her dress.
And yes, darlings, there is a very well stocked bar and counter full of snacks.
That's what happens when you enlist the Three Graces to help you plan your shindigs.

Arrivals
She's very curious about a lot of these nice people who've written her letters.

"This is New York..." Iris drifts off, eyes immediately going to the window. "How high up are we?"
"The name 'skyscraper' is well-earned," is all Charles offers, taking off his coat along with Iris' wrap to drop them off.

Just in case.
She's wearing a black leather dress, with her usual fingerless black gloves and black combat boots. Under the dress she's wearing biker shorts.
Again, just in case. It is always better to be prepared.

But he is a bit wary about apparently coming into the future. Suppose he can't find his way back. Suppose it's too strange.
No, that can't happen. He's Howard Stark, after all.
And the future looks quite well appointed.

This is a very...

Certainly a step up from the arena's attic.
Mako steps inside and is halfway through the entryway when he peeks his head back out the door.
"Bolin? You coming, bro?"

Re: Arrivals
It's not that she doesn't look the part for a party - she's found a shining blue dress and silver shoes, with small sapphire drop earrings and her metal charm necklace. Her blonde hair, now shoulder length, falls loosely on her shoulders, and she's even tied a blue scarf around the bandage on her arm.
But though she looks around the room, expression neutral as her eyes flickering from the Manhattan skyline through the windows to the glow of the fire place, she walks rather slowly, as though disinclined to move too far from the wall.
(The sparks, for the moment, are keeping to just above her shoes, like sparkling anklets.)

Re: Arrivals
A second later the door opens, and the familiar face of a sandy-haired Barman of Milliways peeks in. His eyes widen at the sight of what he sees inside.
"Oh....wow..."
He slips in, closes the door behind himself, and then adjusts the tie of his tuxedo.
This is the first time he's been out of Milliways since before everything went bad, and he's determined to enjoy himself.

Re: Arrivals
Also hard not to notice is the goddess in the red dress.
He's not blind, but he is here with Kate, and Kate is wearing his favorite dress of hers, so all is right with the multiverse.
Tommy himself doesn't really do formal attire unless he has absolutely no choice, but he can clean up nice if he wants to. So this evening he's wearing a black leather jacket over an Aran turtleneck, with neatly fitting dark blue jeans and scuffed motorcycle boots.
Arm-in-arm? Hand-in-hand? Tommy isn't sure how comfortable Kate is yet, but he'll keep his palm pressed to the small of her back as they cross the room together toward their hostess.

Re: Arrivals
As it is, Gus arrives alone and not really knowing if he'll run into anyone he knows there... well, except the hostess of course - and when Aphrodite invites you to a party, you better show up. His favorite purple silk shirt and pressed black slacks serve to bolster what little confidence is lingering after the utter failure sort of joining a cult to get with a girl that he thought he was meant to be with.
He lingers at first, and then resolves himself to a nice default spot near the kitchen.

He put on a suit that he would wear in Ancelstierre before going in and approaching Aphrodite, the red of her dress makes him think of Kait. When he gets to her, he bows, "Thank you for the invitation."

Eh, well. Coyote assures herself that she looks better in it. She's got Raven's arm tucked around her own. He's wearing a white coat, and a black dress shirt instead of his usual t-shirt. It looks like someone has beat some of the dust off him.
"I feel very strange being East of the Mississippi," she confides to him.

Re: Arrivals
It would be polite to greet her hostess, but unfortunately though she's seen many artists' depictions of Aphrodite, she doesn't know what the goddess actually looks like.
Like Aphrodite, Mary's chosen a red dress for the occasion, but it wouldn't take a fashion expert to tell that the two dresses are not from the same era. Mary's would be perfectly suitable were she visiting her grandmother's home on 5th Avenue, but it's pretty plain that this is not the New York that she remembers.

Re: Arrivals
Yep, she's ready to party.
The hot blonde in red is a total attention stealer, and she's visibly jealous when she boogies on over with a cup of wine.
"Hey. Nice digs." She sips her wine and smiles.

Which is, of course, why he's here.
Although you might be forgiven for not recognizing him right off: his hair is pomaded neatly, he's wearing a very sharp three-piece suit of dark blue, there's not a speck of hay on him, and -- most unusually -- he is escorting a lovely young lady. Who may be wearing combat boots under her equally lovely dress.
"I think I mighta misjudged the 'fashionably late' part of the equation," he mutters to River.

Food and Drink
The counter is laid out with a number of appetizing morsels: an array of fruits and cheeses, several big bowls of delicious-smelling dips, platters of pastries and cookies. If you're craving it and it's finger food, it's likely here somewhere.
As mentioned earlier, there's also plenty of booze, with much wine and champagne but a solid showing from the liquor family as well. Most of this appears to be arranged on the marble island in the middle of Aphrodite's kitchen.
Drink up!

Lounging
Interesting how despite most of Milliways being invited to this thing, there seems to be enough space for everyone ...
Re: Lounging
(Being married to a woman who in her bad moods is a force of nature will do that to you.)
So right now he's kicked back on the couch, his hat in his lap as he watches the fire.

Dance Floor
The general mood starts mellow and jazzy, but livens up considerably as the evening progresses to what can probably best be described as Greatest (?) Pop Hits of the 20th Century. A few songs that definitely get played:
- Lights
- I'm So Excited
- I Wanna Dance With Somebody
- Love Is a Battlefield
Oh, uh, and Aphrodite's loft has various wooden columns for structural purposes?
But there's definitely a pole.
Re: Dance Floor
(Yes, you read that right.)
It's born out of as much a natural curiosity as anything else. He doesn't really know it, but he's in the middle of a Chinese Flag Contortion - his build is lean, first and foremost, so he doesn't have much trouble at all moving through the space.

Though there is a bed.
At least it's quiet?
Re: Coat Room
Some of the guests are dead.
Depending on the world of origin, it can make a difference. That, and she is not entirely certain how Aphrodite's world works.
But the room seems to be empty.
Her shoulders relax fractionally, and she takes a few more steps inside, making room for Bruce.
